Upcoming Park Projects: Walnut Island, Knotts Island, and Tennis Courts
The county accepted a $25,000 bequest from the late animal-welfare advocate Ginger Sikes to add grassy knolls and splash pools to Maple Dog Park, honoring the woman whose advocacy built the county animal shelter.
Beach Management and Access
The county's final Beach Management Plan recommends a $35.3 million beach nourishment project for North Corolla, buyouts of threatened structures in the northern reach, and no cost-beneficial fix for Spindrift or South Pine Island. Commissioners directed staff to start the permitting process and to study a service district that would tax benefiting oceanfront property owners — potentially 28.5 cents per $100 valuation during a five-year financing period. Mainland residents were told they would not be taxed for it.
Senior center programming and events
A full slate of activities — sock hop, tea party, Octoberfest, health and wellness day, trips and holiday events — was on the agenda for the county's senior centers.
Corolla and Carova Youth Programming
Parents on the northern beaches want their school-aged kids included in youth recreation programs, and staff met with them in Corolla to gather ideas. Programs could expand to reach these communities.
Tulls Creek Elementary School Athletic Fields
Lights, backstops, and infields are now installed at Tulls Creek Elementary, opening new youth ballfields in Spring 2027.
Currituck Community Park Phase III bid removed
Two new 250-foot baseball/softball fields, awarded to AR Chesson for $6.9 million, should nearly double tournament capacity and could push the park's $1.26 million annual economic impact toward $2.5 million — plus strengthening the case for a county hotel.
Library Advisory Board creation
With the regional library system dissolved, the county is standing up its own five-member Library Advisory Board — but some current trustees were surprised by the change, prompting a consensus-appointment amendment.
Library services and quarterly performance
County libraries saw more circulation, programming and outreach this quarter, and branches reorganized space — including a bigger children's area at Moyock. This shapes what services residents get from their local branches.
Holiday Parade Participation
The animal services advisory board will take part in the Currituck holiday parade, with a planning meeting on November 6 at the Animal Shelter. It's a fun way to showcase adoptable pets and shelter volunteers to the community.
